To answer this question, start with your environment. Do you have consistent warm weather? Are you like us in Arkansas where the weather changes daily! This helps decide the style of tent you will need. 4 season tents are just that. Good for year round camping. Most tents are 2 or 3 season tents. Next how many people are gonna be sleeping inside? A 10 person tent is not big enough for 10 people. More like 4 to 6 comfortable. Lastly, do you want quick deploy like most small tents, standard tents with all the poles, or instant up meaning you’re ready to go in under 3 minutes with most tents.
I will always say yes to this question. Most companies like Core sell a matching foot print which is the size of the tent you’re gonna use for under the tent. Honestly a simple tarp is better than nothing. Just be sure it’s not too big and if it sticks out past the sides, fold it under the tent so water can’t make its way under the floor of your tent. Footprints provide 3 things: Protection to your investment on the ground from rocks, glass, sticks, and anything that can puncture it, provides additional insulation from the ground temperatures, and it keeps water from potentially seaping into the seams of the floor of your tent.
This really depends on the size and what tent has for its frame. Smaller 2-3 person dome tents can weigh as little as 10lbs. Making it perfect for backpacking. A 6-10 person tent with poles you add for the frame can average 20-30 lbs. Where as an instant up tent which has the poles and joints attached can weigh up to 45 lbs. So the bigger the tent and more components involved will add weight making it less favorable for those wanting to walk or hike to a primitive camp versus someone pulling up at a campsite with only a few steps to take.
Most of not all of Core tents have what we call an E Port. Meaning there is a flap that allows you to add an extension cord (s) through the side of the tent without running cords through the doors.
Yes you can and we do. We use an EQK 14k BTU portable AC. We vent the duct out one of the doors or ground vents. This will require a little bit of modification to the roof since the mesh will allow the cold air to escape. Check out my post on the 12 person intang up lighted tent. Using a tarp the size of the tent and tarp clips, were able to secure the tarp over the mesh then attach the rain fly to the tarp. It doesn’t look bad the way we do it, and it keeps the cold air in. Keep in mind. When it’s super humid outside and thehe heat index hits over 100, not much you can do to keep the air cold inside your tent. Remember the walls are thin as well.
Recently we experienced our coldest night yet. With temps reaching 27 degrees. We use a small 1500 watt portable floor heater. We run this all night and do raise the heater off the floor to ensure it doesn’t get too hot. With temps that cold you still need to consider adequate sleeping bags and an extra layer of clothing to be safe. The temps inside the tent stayed around 60 degrees all night long.
This is an easy no. Keep in mind you’re in another animals environment and their home. They can smell good and you could attract other animals depending on locations like bears. You don’t want to wake up to that sound. Safe route, store food in a bag hung from a tree or in your vehicle with the vehicle secure. Bonus note: Always take trash to the dumpster before going to bed. We’ve had some coon visitors even with our bag strung up before.
We started with a king size air mattres. As our son got older, we realized it was time to get him into his own space. Plus we experience some cold temperatures on our first few trips, and air mattresses will transfer the ground temp into the air of the mattress plus. The mattress will acclimate to the temp inside the tent. We experienced a few miserable cold nights before we realized we needed blankets under the mattress and on top. Now we sleep on cots. And Teton makes the best. Read our reviews on our recommendation page.
